Meet Dr. Vermylen
Dr. David A. Vermylen is a proud practitioner of general internal medicine. A native of the Chicago area, he completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University, subsequently obtaining his medical degree (MD) at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He then pursued his Internal Medicine internship and residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he received the Walter Rambach award for the best overall performance by an intern in his residency class, and was honored to serve an additional year as Chief Medical Resident in Internal Medicine. After completing his chief year, Dr. Vermylen joined Michigan Avenue Internists, a distinguished private medical practice in the heart of Chicago. As a practicing physician and member of the clinical faculty at Northwestern, he is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, and continues to teach medical students and resident physicians on a regular basis. After eight years of busy practice in the traditional fee-for-service model, he decided in 2022 to convert to a smaller and more personalized concierge-style practice.
Dr. Vermylen’s style of care is thoughtful, attentive, and responsive. He espouses the advice of the legendary Dr. William Osler: “The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease”. Dr. Vermylen advocates the best evidence-based modern medicine, while also recognizing each patient as a whole person, who has unique needs, preferences, and values. Excellent preventive care is a cornerstone of his practice, but he also understands the importance of effectively diagnosing and managing new medical problems in his patients. In keeping with his internal medicine background, he maintains a broad base of knowledge across the wide spectrum of human disease, and maintains close working relationships with top specialists across the Chicago area.
In his spare time, you may find Dr. Vermylen with his wife (who is also a full-time physician) and their three young children frequenting parks, museums and restaurants throughout the Chicago area.
